Curriculum Enrichment

We have used our sports premium funding to offer specialist teaching for a range of sports including rugby, tennis, football and dance. This has enabled us to provide all children with the same sporting experiences. This academic year, we will be working closely with the Aston Villa Foundation to support staff and provide high quality curriculum delivery through a range of multi-skills.

We also deliver an array of lunch time clubs for children to participate in including tennis, rugby and dance.

Throughout the year the Physical Education curriculum is further enriched by offering new sporting activities that all children can experience, for example; Bhangra workshops, climbing walls and archery.

Steph from Youthercise taught us some great moves for the dance floor! Even the adults joined in - such a fun way to get moving!

As well as an annual sports day, children take part in inter-house sports competitions.

All Stars cricket coach came in to school to carry out cricket workshops with Year One to inspire the children and also teachers for their summer term planning.

Year Two were very excited to spend a day at the Aston Villa Foundation with their specialist coaches. We took part in lots of different activities and tasks to support our learning in many areas of the curriculum.

As a special treat, we also got to experience a glimpse of a friendly game taking place in the stadium!

Throughout the year, themed days/weeks are woven into the curriculum. These include, Anti-bullying Week, Mental Health and Wellbeing week, charity fundraising events, World Book Day and Science week.

This year, Nursery and Reception have enjoyed having caterpillars in school and watching them change into beautiful butterflies! Year 2 have also observed larvae turn into pupae and then emerge into ladybirds in the Summer term.

'When I Grow Up' Day

Year One came to school dressed as someone they aspire to be - police officers were a favourite..

We greatly value the opportunities that trips offer our pupils. Trips aim to bring learning alive and provide first-hand experience for all children. Extra-curricular outings such as sporting competitions and performances also take place with local schools and community.

Reception Trip to Ash End House Farm

Reception had a wonderful time on their trip to Ash End House Farm. We loved feeding the sheep, goats and ducks and learnt all about each animal. Did you know that goats are very intelligent animals. You can even teach them their name and they will come when you call them! There were some really cute kids that were only one day old and some lovely piglets too. We stroked some tiny ducklings and chicks and even met a super-doft gosling! We got to pick our own egg to take home, and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the playgrounds. What a great trip!

Year One Trip to Dudley Zoo and Castle

Year One visited the zoo in Science week to learn about different groups of animals. Did you know that you can find reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals and fish at the zoo? Our trip helped us to learn about what animals eat. Some of the animals are carnivores which means that they eat meat. Other animals are herbivores which means that they eat plants. Some animals eat both - we call these omnivores!

Year Two Trip to the Black Country Living Museum

Year Two visited the Black Country living museum to find out about Victorian life. We were pleased that our our teachers and lessons are not like Victorian times!

We invite our parents and carers into school for a variety of workshops such as maths, reading, speech and language, where we share information to help support children’s learning at home. We also organise ‘hands on’ sessions where parents and carers work alongside their children in the school environment.

After receiving information about the teaching and learning of maths, parents and carers have the opportunity to work with their children, problem solving and completing maths based activities.

We hold 'Inspire Workshop' afternoons with lots of fun and crafty themed activities based on the topic we are currently learning. Year 2 enjoyed their 'Secret Garden' Inspire Workshop where children took part in activities with a parent/ carer, such as creating a secret garden, decorating garden-themed biscuits and creating nature wind-chimes.

Visitors have a valuable role to play and can contribute to many aspects of the life and work of the school. Visitors deliver inspiring talks and activities across a wide range of subjects, giving pupils access to outside experiences and expertise. Visitors provide a link with the wider community - children have the opportunity to work alongside artists, musicians, authors, health professions and others.

Uncle’s Story Shop helped Year two with their story telling and creative writing skills. Children were able to show case their imaginations.

The local police visited children in Reception. They were learning about people in the community who help us.

We provide opportunities for children to take part in a wide range of musical activities and performances where they are encouraged to sing, compose and work creatively with sound. Through active listening, pupils’ awareness, understanding and appreciation of a wide variety of music are developed.

In KS1 children are given the opportunity to learn the Violin in group lessons. In KS2 further opportunities to learn a musical instrument are offered.

Visiting theatre groups offer the children experiences of drama, music and song.

We were extremely lucky to welcome Toscana Strings into school to perform the story The Tortoise and The Hare. It certainly inspired some young musicians.

We are lucky enough to belong to an active community that values community engagement and endeavours to support all local residents. This offers us opportunities to form local links with, for example; supporting local businesses, welcoming visitors from local charities, partnerships with local colleges, links with local care homes. This enables us to develop children’s understanding of belonging and appreciation.

We have beautiful school grounds for children to explore and learn in, including two playgrounds, Reception and Nursery outdoor classroom areas, a large field and a woodland area. We utilise these areas to support our teaching and learning as often as possible. We are keen for children to develop an appreciation of the outdoors and our environment. We want to empower them to notice and protect our environment.

Year one children were learning about seasonal changes during Science lessons. After a hunt for signs of Autumn children used their findings to create Autumn collages.

Year 2 enjoyed a fun morning outdoors as part of Outdoor Classroom Day. The children took part in an Autumn walk, using their senses to explore and inspire their Autumn poems.

We support a range of charities including those in the local community. Some of the charities we have supported include Children in Need, Comic Relief and Birmingham Hospitals.

We also follow children’s interest. We have fundraised for World Wildlife Fund after a child in year one presented his fundraising idea to Mrs Kenny and the school council.

For Anti-bullying week, we kick started the week by wearing odd socks to show and celebrate that we are all different and that it is ok to be different.

We welcomed Rev Chris from Wylde Green United Reformed Church to take our Christingle Assembly as part of our Christmas celebrations. He made a giant Christingle and explained what each part means. We then visited the Church for a special Christmas celebration service. Year Two told the Christmas story by singing songs and acting.

We enjoy welcoming visitors into school to perform and inspire our children.

We have a close relationship with St Michaels Church and enjoy performing the Christmas Nativity story to families. We also enjoy welcoming Reverend Gary into school for assemblies.

Andi Markham from Kids Trust UK and his friends Jack and Grandad are firm favourites with the children when they visit for assemblies.

We have enjoyed assemblies delivered by the Four Oaks Assembly Team.

Although we are only an Infant school we like to offer our children the opportunities to take on roles and responsibilities throughout school. In years one and two children are able to apply to become a school council representative. In year two children can apply to become a postal worker and be responsible for sorting and posting the Christmas post.

Other roles include; playground buddies, litter pickers and various classroom responsibilities.
